Auctions are a great place to find rare and one of a kind music instruments. I stumbled across a great find at one of our member actions. A rare 1762 Jacobus Stainer Violin. My wife would love to get her hands on this one! Stainer Violins were one of the most sought after in Europe until the late 1800s. https://sacvalleyauctions.com/auctions/estate-sale-woodland-3~112/lot-80---44-violin---by-jacobus-stainer-~10083/
Unique Features of Jacobus Stainer Violins
Unique Features of Jacobus Stainer Violins
- highly skilled craftsmanship, particularly displayed in cut scrolls and occasionally carved heads of lions, angels, or women
- pronounced higher arching of the belly than the back
- Broad lower back
- varnish ranging in color from amber to orange-red, comparable in brilliance to Cremonese varnish
While later instruments by Antonio Stradivari became more popular and by many are considered higher quality instruments due to their flatter and broader design which made them a more powerful sounding instrument in orchestras and concert halls many consider the Stainer Violins to have a more subtle sweetness of tone. For this reason they are often preferred for smaller more intimate settings.
